tech constraints
The mobile app launch provided the proof of success for investment in additional features. I was engaged to translate the client’s visions within a budget.
THE GOAL: New features proposal based upon what the users value and meet the tech budget.
Design Process
strategy
The client, Mondo, shared his personal experience about why he initially created the mobile app. The conversation deepened my empathy for the users that utilize the app.
Mondo had his own ideas for the feature enhancements and a defined budget for the product development.
Empathy
During the strategy session I noted actions and feelings people encounter when they are using the app. An empathy map provides me deeper insight and uncovers the needs of the user.
storyboard
I created a storyboard sketch to visually predict and explore what the user’s experience is. It helps me understand the flow and use of the product over time.
experience map
An experience map provides the user’s perspective and helps identify opportunities and pain points. The tool provides visualization of the situation and sparks idea generation for new features.
ideation
After analyzing the research and observations, I created feature cards to represent a single activity of a feature. I used the quick prototyping method to gain feedback.
Feedback
I worked with the development team to review the feature cards. The collaboration provided me the feedback early in the process if the feature was feasible to produce. The developers estimated how much effort (time) was needed to complete each feature.
analysis
I used the Kano model as a classification method for customers preferences of the features. The analysis allowed me the insight to balance the features users valued and the tech budget. The outcome provided the client metrics to support their final decision about their investment.
Solution
a clear roadmap to develop the next version of the mobile app.
mindful
The process from ideation to solutions were validated with the user population. The user centered approached provided a product that the users value.
roadmap
The annotated wireframes provide the developer visual intent and notes to execute the features. The existing style guide is referenced for the user interface guidelines.
approval
Tangible metrics assist the client to invest in the features that bring the most value to the user’s experience.
conclusion
My goal for every project is to provide an optimal user experience for the end product and for the client. I delivered a product that met the clients tech budget and aligned with his vision. The client was excited the features were researched and confirmed with the users.
